Last spring’s String Gathering was a great success. Thanks to all the players, guests and volunteers who made it so enjoyable. We hope to. see you all again this year.

Please hold the dates – we’ll be gathering to play string band music of any genre this spring.

If you registered to let us know you are coming you may receive updates.

Please call for a separate room reservation at the hotel in Baraboo so you stay overnight and play as long as you like.

Please be considerate of others. If you are not feeling well, we’ll miss you, but please stay home and help keep the string music community healthy.

What is it?

This is an event that celebrates playing traditional acoustic music. There are no performers, no audiences; just musicians who are playing and others who are listening

We play Old Time, Cajun, Irish, Bluegrass, Upper Midwest Traditional, Scandinavian, Country/Roots even Manouche Jazz. Any other acoustic string music with a jamming tradition is welcome. Please come, sit in and play along in the musical tradition of any scheduled or spontaneous jam.

Breakfast is included with your stay.  Be sure and say you are part of the String Gathering (note: they may call it String Fling) when reserving your room and ask for the special room rate.

When

The event runs from Thursday March 30 at 4:00 pm (check-in) until Sunday April 2, 2023 at 11:00 am (check-out).

Please stop at the registration table before joining in the music. Registration is free. Vaccination is not required.

In addition to scheduled jams and workshops, Spontaneous jams will happen whenever folks gather in the jam spaces.

Jams will also undoubtedly pop up in the hotel rooms during the weekend.

Technology workshop

Hall 3

An opportunity to share new music technologies and traditional music tune collections.  Patrick will share experiences with forScore (iOS). Open for discussion and experiences with tools for Android devices.

Banjo circle

Hall 2

A place for banjo players to share the many techniques of this versatile instrument. No facilitator. Other instruments welcome. Banjo jokes discouraged. Mandolin jokes ok.

Mando circle

Hall 1

A safe place for mandolin players to talk a lot about mandolins and even play them a little. No facilitator. Other instruments welcome.

Guitar circle

Hall 3

New this year, a place for guitar players to trade riffs, discuss instruments, and compare styles. No facilitator. Other instruments welcome.

Fiddle circle

Hall 1

New this year… a literal fiddle hangout for players of all levels to trade songs, styles, and ideas. No facilitator. Other instruments welcome.

Bass circle

Hall 3

New this year…bass circle is an opportunity for bass players to share tips, techniques, and styles. Other instruments welcome. No facilitator.

Waltz workshop

Exploring waltzes and waltz harmonies with fiddle player Christina Rose, accompanied by Eva Bilger on fiddle and Patrick O’Dea on guitar.
